Position overview
Position title: Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering
Salary range: The salary range for this position is $115,000 – $125,000 academic year (nine-month basis) for Assistant Teaching Professors and $130,000 – $155,000 (nine-month basis) for Associate Teaching Professors. Starting salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Percent time: Full-time, 100%

Anticipated start: July 1, 2024, with the academic year beginning in September 2024.

Position Description

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (https://engineering.ucsc.edu/departments/electrical-and-computer-engineering) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor position in the area of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). The successful candidate will be responsible for leading capstone design projects in coordination with other faculty in the department and across the Baskin School of Engineering, as well as bringing experiential learning into other courses in the curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to use best practices to introduce experiential learning in the undergraduate progression, and to revise and evaluate existing experiential learning practices both directly within ECE as well as in multi-disciplinary projects.

The working titles of these positions are Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, while the payroll titles are Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment or Lecturer with Security of Employment. These titles are used differently at the University of California than at some other institutions. Important to note is that these positions have all the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate; “Security of Employment'' is directly analogous to tenure; and the positions earn sabbatical credit and have summer flexibility. Faculty in these positions have Principal Investigator status for the purpose of grant applications and administration. Faculty in these positions, as with all faculty, are regularly reviewed for further advancement and salary increases. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is part of the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz. UC Santa Cruz is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an association of the top research universities in the US. Baskin Engineering is home to six departments contributing to the richness of its research in materials, devices and instruments; engineering mathematics; computing; and health engineering. ECE has a diverse curriculum with an emphasis on Digital and Analog Hardware, Devices, Photonics, Communications, Renewable Power, Signals and Systems, and Robotics, offering separate degree programs in electrical engineering and in robotics. Our electrical engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Nestled in a redwood forest above the city of Santa Cruz and close to Silicon Valley, our beautiful residential campus has a rich history of embracing groundbreaking interdisciplinary work and building deep research ties with the local high-tech industry. Our proximity to Silicon Valley, including a second campus in Santa Clara, affords unique and exciting opportunities for collaboration with industry researchers, as well as with faculty and students at other San Francisco Bay Area universities.

The successful candidate will direct and teach in the Capstone Senior Design program, where teams of senior-level students design and construct substantial projects during a two-quarter project sequence. Many projects are performed in collaboration with stakeholders from outside UC Santa Cruz. The selected candidate will also participate in other design and lab-centric courses offered in the department. Some current examples are ECE118 Mechatronics, ECE121 Microprocessor System Design, ECE173 High Speed Digital Design, and ECE157 RF Hardware Design, which are the core design courses that prepare students for the capstone sequence.

Candidates with strength in at least one of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • A track record of design or engineering project-based collaboration with commercial, non-profit, or educational groups;
  • A track record of leading engineering design courses;
  • Strong background in one or more of the areas of focus of Electrical and Computer Engineering including engineering design, systems engineering, computer systems design, product design, electrical systems design, robotics, cyber-physical systems;
  • Educational research concerning capstone design programs, experiential learning, and entrepreneurial thinking;
  • Experience directing multiple simultaneous engineering teams.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an educational research program, supported by external grants, driven by personal intellectual inquiry with likely focus areas including the senior design program, other experiential learning programs, engineering education, or broadening participation in engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
